Babies’ Day Out (Safari Part 4)

By Dale

The last day of our safari was in many ways a bonus.  We understand that typically you only get 3 game drives in the time frame of our stay but this trip that Dan and Courtney set up for us had a fourth.  It was a beautifully cool morning as we set out on this last drive.  We were accustomed to the routine and terrain by now but certainly not bored with it.  In fact Lizzy said that morning through a big smile, “I could do this every day!”

But would there be anything new to see?  Oh yes!  Recall that young female in the tree with her kill?  Amazingly, we found her this next morning transferring her 3 cubs to a more secluded area.  WOW!  Even our veteran drivers were amazed at this rarity.  This would be what our driver (Henry) eventually called “Babies Day” because we saw this and other sightings of infant safari animals.

Can you believe it?  These little guys were simply adorable.  And so camouflaged it was hard to pick them out in the tall grass.

Then we found not one but two lioness leading their six cubs across an open portion of the mara.  We couldn’t get over how cute these cubs were!  Unfortunately, the other families in our group did not get to see this caravan.

These mommas didn’t seem irritated by our presence but they were certainly on the lookout!

Then came the family of elephants.  How spectacular!  It was like God was giving us an encore to an already stellar show.  Can you feel the love?

What a special day!  This “just happened” to be March 30th, my birthday! And as many of you know, I am the youngest of three brothers which of course makes me “The Baby”!  These baby animals made this baby’s birthday one of the happiest ever.  Now the family is thinking of how to top it for the big 40 next year!
